Special Education Showcase
Welcome to the Showcase page of my portfolio! This page displays some of the work that has helped to shape me as an educator and a learner. One of the reasons I decided to focus on Special Education for my degree was my lack of prior knowledge and experience. During my first year teaching, I felt unprepared and lacked confidence when modifying assessments, collaborating on IEP's, and developing behavior plans. Through my coursework in the MAED program, I have grown in this area. Though I am constantly learning and refining my skills, I now consider myself a thoughtful and productive teammate in any student's Special Education journey.
CollaborationCo-teaching can be an important component to collaboration. The lesson plan below highlights a lesson sequence to be taught by myself and the Special Education teacher to maximize learning for all students in the classroom.

BehaviorOne huge challenge of working with all students is managing behavior. Students with special needs may present unique behavior challenges that can potentially limit learning. Below is a behavior analysis and plan I developed to help a colleague work with a student whose behavior was challenging to her.

Learning EnvironmentPart of being an effective teacher of any group of students is learning and practicing engagement strategies. Through the use of new technologies, I work actively on keeping students engaged. Click below to see a sample of Prezis I created for a variety of uses in the classroom.

Subject Area KnowledgeKnowing how to reach a variety of learners is essential, especially when some students may have disabilities that are hard to identify. Below is an informational webpage created by a colleague and myself on writing disabilities.

School-Home ConnectionParents and other family members are a vital component of a student's success in school. Below you can read about my plan for school-home communication. The foundation is in trust and mutual respect to create the most positive home and school learning environments for the student.
